I don't know if anyone has viewed this blog is years. Most likely not, but just in case, here is an update of sorts.
The Bloody Bike Brigade is in a state of flux. The Pirate has moved on, Joe is doing his own thing and Paul is tracking mountain lions in eastern Oregon. Since I have moved to Eugene, Sonny Tremain has started riding, again, but with a vengeance. An old schooler from the 90's, Cash Reynolds, has also resumed and for now this is the BBB crew as of today.
The BBB hosted a jam this past July and we are planning on another one September 18th.

I'm not sure if Joe will like this post, but it gave me a pick-up. Joe told me he lost alot of weight, which is very cool. I was weighed at the doctor's and I am 6 pounds up. With the lack of riding, I am having a hard time scaling back my snacking. With Joe doing something about HIS weight, I feel motivated to deal with mine as well. You young fucks will learn, oh yes...
On another note, I am thinking about getting together a park bike. I went to the Keizer park with Toby and my bike is just too slow and snappy, though the freecoaster was treating me good. I think I am gonna build up this frame when I get the new one. By summer, I could have a bike.

Well, looks like I will buy the frame from Shad at Goods for $75. I really hope it lightens my bike. I emailed Pat at FlatFuel and he said he thought it was just over half a pound lighter. After this, there isn't really anything I can justify buying for my bike. It's really fuckin dialed. I am thinking aout having the bars and frame painted before I put it all together. Maybe to match the rims? Or a really bloody red...

Well, I had an accident, no joke. I'm alright, no injuries, but my car is another matter. I am going to try and get a picture of it up. Right now, I am in a rental. Seattle center. Mid-day session. Pirate, Coach, Sarge and me riding in the court-yard and nobody cares. The freedom we had at that moment was great. Maybe you guys don't understand quite what I mean. Freedom from pressure. Freedom to just ride and not worry about what I am putting aside to do so. It seems like I have to leave town to get that, which sucks.
It was perfect weather. There was a fountain, lots of people around. Not the greatest surface, but we were doing it old-school...downhill. My bike was so cool to me back then. I was stoked because it was the BEST bike I had ever owned. We were going to be riding with pros that weekend, though we thought it was goint o be Jesse.
Mickey Guidos was awesome and that spot was incredible. The sessions we had were great and are imprinted on my mind till the day I die. But something about the Seattle center session was unique.
Four grown men with different viewpoints enjoying time on their little bikes making circles.

I need some advice on what to do with my currnt situation. I'm not sure why Chris had to say something about it, but I guess it just happens.

Is it my kid? I'm not sure. Her dad is pretty cool, and he gets along with my family quite well. If it is my kid, I'm doomed. I have no way to support a new child. Plus, she might be losing her job as a fitness trainer.

I'm now living both in Bend and Keizer. The commute is killing me for gas. Her dad is putting a lot of pressure on me to move over there.

Well, Chris called me. He is apparently back in the states for a little while and tried to hook up with Paul. The reason Paul has been missing in action became quite clear...he met a chick on the internet. Right away I wanted details and Chris didn't have many to give me. Here is what he said...
Basically, Paul met this chick through Match.com. She works at a gym in Bend. They had been meeting when he goes fishing. Her father is a police officer there.
Anyway, Paul told Chris that she is pregnant and that the baby is not his, but that she got pregnant right about the same time that they met and the father is convinced that Paul is the father. The baby is due in march and Paul is waiting for paternity to be established. In the meantime, the police/father and Paul's mom have had some pretty heated conversations and Paul has basically lived at work. One of the women that works with Paul has become his confidant and Paul told Chris that they are very close. The only thing that Paul isn't into is this chick's weight. He told chris she is "overweight," but wouldn't elaborate, though she is bilingual.
I tried to call Paul, but he isn't answering his phone. What is it with this guy and pregnancies?
Chris is going to meet up with Paul for dinner later this week, so hopefully he will get more details on just what is going on.

Behind Bars

Joe dropped off Jeff's old set of Contortion bars, today. They are big and wide and I really thought I would hate them. I wanted to hate them. I really did. I threw them on because it was really nice out and I wanted to ride.
They felt great. I popped up into a hang-5 and it literally popped up! It felt like my head-tube angle had gotten alot steeper! The bike was alot easier to control, too. It might have been because they are wider, but I think mostly the control was increased by the height. I sessioned them for about an hour and it was a good session. They are too wide, though...I nailed my leg several times. A little whacking and they will be good.
With these taller bars, my bike is slowly becoming more like Chase's bike...

At some point, I really thought that I would stop riding by the time I was 35. It's almost unreal how much riding has ingrained itself in my life. At this point, riding is one of hte most important factors in most of my relationships, life decisions and scheduling stresses. I try not to think too much about how money, time and heart I put into something that will never return anywhere near the cost.
So many people have pretty much openly sneared in my face because I beat myself up on a kid's bike. It's never really bothered me. If you know me very well at all, then you know that being sneared at is usually not something I ignore. Riding is different. I think I just accept the fact that most people don't have something in their life which lends them insight into my passion for flatland.
They just don't get it.
You can't compare it to football, because I ride way more than I spectate watching videos or the rare mass-media coverage. You can't compare it to sky-diving, because it's not about risking life for a short-lived thrill. You can't compare it to painting, because I don't leave behind my tricks on a canvas, unless you count my tire marks.
Flatland is my cape and mask.

Joe and I have talked about this a few times, but I haven't brought it up on the BBB site until today. It's an uncomfortable subject. Nobody likes to admit wrong doing or weakness. Nobody likes to point the finger. We all want to be able to look one another in the eye, but that is happening less and less.
I think we all have been trying to act like eveything was ok, but it's hard for me to do. I feel like I have been pretending. Lately I have been riding at the ghetto courts by myself and I have felt like somethings wrong. It's hard to think this about myself, but here I go. It's time to get this out in the open, where we can discuss it like adults. I think the wherehouse is making us soft.
Now, I know that your first instinct is to deny, but when was the last time you rode somewhere that was a little bumpy or slightly slanted and didn't stop and think about how bad it is compared to the wherehouse? Yes, friends...we are growing spoiled, weak and pampered. It is getting to the point where riding at the ghetto courts, which not too long ago seemed to be the best spot I had had in ten years, is stressful. I rarely pull anything and am plagued by the desire to drive to Hilsborro.
Whew! I'm glad to finally get this out in the open. My hope is that we can address this in the near future.

Well, I am home and as I write this, I'm sure that Joe is smiling and belching and Scott's face is probably a little red. I abstained from the post-jam shenanagans due to lack of funds and.., well, cramping in my legs. Basically I rode my ass off, enjoyed my tricks and experience the pain as an honor bestoyed upon me by my battle-worn body.
Really alot of tricks went down both nights. Friday, the warehouse was host to Darrel, Devin, Brett, Justin, Joe and I. Devin rode about as long as any of us, which was cool. No dog shit this time, either. The good vibe we shared left me excited for the following day, when Canadians would be there, including Billy and Travis Collier.
Saturday, Coach had me up early. No lethargic dreams, this time. We gathered up the goods and headed out, getting to Conastoga first, along with Adam, a videographer who was filming/interviewing for a spot on a cable show in Eugene. He made us sign release forms with our own blood while he made horns on his forehead and mumbled in Latin.
Devin and Justin reversed roles for this jam; Justin showed up hung-over and left early, while Devin rode hard all day and impressed with his tricks. I was impressed with Devin, to say the least. It was also nice to ride with Canucks, again. Nels brought a van full of his buddies, including Billy, Travis and another guy, who I didn't get a name for. It was great watching Collier going through his dialed tricks and combos, but the person who really kept me going strong all day was Billy.
Billy is one of those riders who stoked you merely by being stoked to be on his bike. It's that simple. The plethera of styles at the jam ranged from James (fork-wheelies and hydrants) to Collier( you fuckin name it). I don't really remember what people were doing because I was focussed on my tricks all day.
My M.O. was this; Get the hole-shot and snake Justin or Nels, then do my trick and hope someone got it on film if I happened to pull it, then roll over to my spot against the wall and watch Billy go through his smooth switchy combos and get stoked...then repeat. All day. I loved it.
You boys have fun in Canada next weekend. Bring home some of the energy for me...I love this shit.
I want to say that Joe puts alot of his energy and time into his jams and they are getting better. Thanks, Coach. At this point, these are the best things I have been a part of. You really know how to throw a party, and I think right now you are really getting this scene together.

After about 30 minutes of riding, I tossed my bike out of a halfhiker and the handlbar busted off! The right side busted off right at the weld point. Looks like the Aaron Frost Sequence bars don't pass Chris's endurance test. Sux...

Lethargic Dream

I spent the night at Joe's last weekend and I had the trippiest dream...
I was standing in the middle of the wherehouse, there was a strong wind and there was no roof on the building. My hands were outstretched and I was searching for my bike. A crowd of young women wearing only g-string bikinis walked aimlessly around, aparently not noticing me. The bikinis the women wore were all the same colors as my bike, which confused me. Joe rolled by in a hitchiker and slapped me hard on the face.
Sarge scuffed by in a locomotive and socked my shoulder as hard as he could. Chris glided by in a bar-ride and kicked me in the forehead. Scott boounced by in a pogo'ing trackstand and spit in my eye.
I spotted my bike in the corner and made a b-line for it as Devin rolled by in a death-truck and threw a beer at me. Finally I had my bike and invited four of the women to go for a ride...one on each peg. As we headed for the door, Abby jumped in our path and asked if she could have a ride. I looked sheepishly at the four women as they scowled and stepped off the pegs.
The next thing I know, I was waking up on Joe's couch to the sound of him rubbing lotion on his head.

Hey, what do you guys think the future of flatland in Oregon is gonna be like? Where do you think its headed? Do you think it will die out? Any new young riders comin into the scene?

Over here, there are so many new riders. I've pretty much met all the riders here in Seoul, but the last couple times I went out there were a bunch of new young kids. I said "How long you been riding?" but they said just a few month or even weeks. Some of them are still in high school. Maybe they won't last, but it seems like there are so many kids here who wanna get into it. It's fuckin awesome. They think I'm old school!

I finally got my computer fixed and running again, and I got to watch the DVD video this guy made of the Seoul riders. Dude it is badass! You can see special guest star The Pirate ripping it up and the soundtrack is pretty good too. Ten minutes of flatland riding at Yoeido Park in Seoul. The riding in the video is amazing except for me. It's pretty embarassing to see myself in a flatland video because I suck! There's some funny scenes in it though. I wish I knew how to put it up on the site...Anyway, I'll make sure you guys can get copies when I come back for vacation in September.

So I went on a date with this girl last Sunday. She's one of the hotties around here every teacher's lookin to score. We met and started walking for about 5 minutes and then suddenly she runs off to some guy she sees. I thought it was one of her friends, so I walk up and she says "This is my boyfriend!" Wtf? My face goes blank and I see this guy's all red faced and looks super pissed. His buddies are standing there looking at me like who the fuck is this white guy with your girl?! HA HA HA!

So I'm just standing there thinking, oh man what the hell is this? Finally, she says to me "Okay, let's go." She looks really nervous. So then I walked off with that dudes girlfriend! No fuckin way my girl would have been walking away! Then I said you have a boyfriend? What did he say? He looks pissed! She says yeah, I'm in trouble. He later sends some messages to her saying I don't even wanna talk to you. HA HA! I bet it's over for them! Stupid, dude, just stupid.

We only met for about an hour and then I said, "I think you got a lot of problems. You better go take care of them." And we left. That was it. Shortest date ever. That tops them all.

I was at the coolest bar in Seoul, the Spot, and I looked in the beer cooler and what did I see? A big-ass can of Monster! Oh man! I gotta buy that shit! So I grabbed a can and slammed it on the counter and reached for my wallet. But the guy at the bar says, "You can't buy that." What?! I said I got it from the cooler. He says, "You can't just buy that. We only use it to mix drinks like a vodka and Monster." Come on! I was denied. But then I waited a while and this cool girl came to work the bar and I started talking to her, and then I said "I'll give you 5,000 won ($5) for one can of Monster." Finally, she says okay. Oh man was it worth it! I drank it the next morning at work at 6:30 a.m. retelling the story of how I got ahold of the smuggled goods. Damn I wish I had one now.

In a certain region of the state lies hundreds of miles of desert. In those remote areas of vast desert, sage brush comes in contact with small well worn towns. Sometimes these towns can be several miles apart, not uncommon to find a distance of 80 to 100 miles between two. And it is here, out in pioneer country, where some of the most bizarre individuals gather. It would be fair to say, as a matter of fact, that this is the place Jeremy would love to dump his ex-wife off.
Christmas Valley finds itself in prime Antelope country, where farmers grow alfalfa, where Jack rabbits gather in abundance. On the outskirts of Christmas Valley, we find several small shacks, well off the beaten path. If we look even farther off the roads of crumbling asphalt, over the rolling hills of sage, our eyes can barely make out hidden trailers. One such trailer belongs to a unique citizen of this great valley. Instead of one trailer, we discover several, as if a small communtiy has gathered here. But we then realize, they all belong to one man, and one man alone. He has a dog, Rutger. Several cats scatter about, looking for cover from the blazing sun overhead. This man we see sitting on the back of an old rusted out truck bed, with long wiry hair, a greasy complexion complimenting his uneven grin, is none other than Bruce.
"They say I am clinically insane! I think it's the greatest defense machanism in the world!" Bruce grunts, he lets the words sink in. His eyes are clearly in another place at times. "I really do believe that there is a conspiracy going on out here. It's like the mafia lives in town! Ha!" Again he lets the words drift away with the breeze, slowly shaking his head. While his hand brushes hair from his face, Rutger is busy gnawing at your feet.
"Um, sir, Bruce. Your dog, he..." And then you are cut off. "Rutger! Get off him! Ahh, he likes you. He likes to gnaw on things. One time, I'm inside my trailer, and I hear this scratching right out me door. Shoot, I'm wondering what it is. So I take a peek. It's a damn coyote! It wants to play with Rutgar," Bruce scratches his head, "but I won't let it." He finishes just in time to catch more hair crossing over his face. The breeze is rather warm.
"I don't care if you shoot, just don't shoot me dog Rutger, he is all I've got," he pauses, glances around him, "I don't also have no guns." Smirks are a common occurance with Bruce, almost as common as the flies buzzing around him. Clearly this man has no power, elictricity has not visited this place in quite a while. Running water, even a well system, not around here. Bruce is a squatter on the land, living off the land, paying no taxes. Bruce and our friendly government would get along just great. "The government is a conspiracy, I think they are after me. I'm telling you, people are crazy out here. Watch out." The only one to be watching out for, you find in your thoughts, is Bruce himself.
Wonder on how he survives, what he eats, where he gets his water. Generous thoughts plague your mind on such issues. You find yourself slowly drifting back to your vehicle. Bruce rambles on some more. Some of the words are slurred, and you wonder if all the sage has gotten to him. He looks at you, his grin is ever present. You just want to leave.
After leaving, a part fo you has been changed. Maybe minor, but there has been a change. You have encountered one of the lost civilians, one that has not been accounted for, one that actually lives among the coyotes and rabbits of this haunted valley. Bruce is forever etched somewhere deep in your mind. Now, if you are like me, you know that one day you will go back and visit him. Just to check up. Guys like that need to be checked up on. Sometimes it's guys like Bruce, who make this valley what it is. Rugged. I guess thats why I love it so much. I just can't get enough of it.

I was just curious as to what they were doing way out in the woods, covered in dirt, yelling aloud, flailing themselves all over the place.

I had a nice little session last night. Got through a few half-bar to turbines and had them going fowards, but didn't pull them. I also got from gyrator/lardyard to upside-down wheelie...ala Sarge style. Feels good to steal one from him. Dunno where I am gonna go with it, but it's fun. Once again, I am to the point where I need an exit, but I'll probably learn another link and the exit will have to wait.

At work today a coworker came up to me and said "the GM just called from the warehouse and he found a radio so he's bringing back to use".No big deal right,well I dont trust the guy who gave me this info,it's probably no big thing but it really makes me nervous.

Well, I tried to get in a session for mother's day and I did. It was pretty warm outside, but the ghetto courts were clear, I had them to myself. Plenty of people around, though. I was doing pretty good, messing around with going from a hang-ten halfpack combo into a tea kettle (basically a bar-split steam-roller with my peg leg in front of the bars). I didn't get close, but it doesn't feel too abnormal or weird. I went to pedal for speed and BAM!! my chain broke. I went down, hard. I heard a few laughing and it sucked, but I tried to shake it off. I rode for a little bit longer, but I just couldn't keep my head straight and I kept getting frustrated when I would go for the pedal on an exit and get a pedal in my shin.
If anybody wants their mind blown, go to Global-flat and get the large file for the Ninja spin in Paris, France. You will not believe what people are doing on their bikes IN A FLATLAND RUN! The file is huge (over 200 mgs) but worth it. European flat comps seem to be unreal and everyone was there, including our favorite, Nate P., who snagged fourth.

I had a good session on sunday. I basically hit most of my tricks first try. Hydrant/switch steam/flip/ pegahawk/steam/pinky-squeak...pulled it first time. Turbine/pinkys...Yup. Hang-ten/half-hike...yeah. Switch-steam/ pinky/ hang-five kick exit...done. I thought I was gonna do the BIG TRICK, but alas, it didn't happen. Pretty much stopped pulling everything a few minutes later. Sigh, oh well. I have been riding alone alot since the Sarge is MIA and even using my music. I hate to think how much shit I gave Sargy about his Ipod, but I have to admit that I am getting used to it and it's kinda hard to not have it. Duo is my main tunes right now, along with Deep Forest. And Riverside is a keeper. No bagpipes for me!

Ok, I was riding at the ghetto courts, yesterday, and I pulled the trick again. Hydrant to karl kruizer to half-bar flip to turbine hiker. Like it was nothing...it really surprised me. Then, I almost pulled another one right after it! I messed up getting out of the steam at the end, but I had done everything before the steam perfectly. In the ghetto courts! I was stoked.
I also am learning the hang-five out of hydrants, which wil lcome in handy. I am actually working on an exit for tricks...not like me at all. But, just to reassure you all that the world is not ending, I worked on keeping teh hang-five going after I kick. I WILL NOT END A COMBO! Pretty soon, I'll just do one trick when I ride...it will last hours and when I'm done riding, I'll just jump off, having not pulled a completed link all session!

Ok, here is another vid, though not the footage I have dubbed "The Steve Affair." This some Joe footy from last weekend and some footy of Joe's from last fall along with some music called "That Song, " by Big Wreck. Hit it up!
The Steve footy should be coming soon. Steve has really gone out of his way to get the footage to me despite the complexities of getting media converted, ripped and stored. If you haven't dealt with getting footage from one computer to another, you have no idea what you're missing. But I am learning alot from all this. My advice? Ok, here it goes:

1: File types must be converted, not simply renamed.
2: You have to know what player will not only PLAY a certain file type, but which software will CONVERT them as well.
3: It is best to save media without the "read only" box checked and just be careful when deleting media.
4: Use the software for a given camera, or else pay attention to whether or not your capture program alos captures the audio (mine doesn't).
5: "Dissolve" also means "Fade." Who knew?
6: Arranging footage within a movie to fit the music is a bitch. When it happens out of hand, you have no idea how cool it can be.
7: A three minute video takes me hours to put together. I can't imagine how many hours an editor puts in on a two hour movie!

Ok, I had a great session today with Paul. Steve came along and brought his camera so I could get a little stuff on tape. I pulled a bomb. Yeah, it is something I have worked on before off and on. Well, I pulled it. I am going to put the vid up so you guys can check it out, so I am not telling here.
Another thing I pulled was a hang-5 out. Watching Justin do his kicked turbine 5's, I kinda got stoked on them, so I worked for a little while on kicking to 5 out of my turbine steam stuff. I did one, though it was weak, but I pulled it and it is a good out, which I need.

Mellow Ride

Well, I think I have done what I set out to do by taking off my brakes; remind myself why I use brakes. Nowadays I pretty much want to be able to get on my bike and do tricks. Sans brakes I end up working hard to "fill the gap" that brakes take care of. It's cool to roll around, but I am into some really fun switches, which I know I COULD do brakeless, but it would take more time. Who has time?
Not I.
So I am getting a cable tomorrow and I will be rocking the clinchers by this weekend.
I had a cool little session, tonight. The accomplishment for the evening was rolling hang-10 into half-packs with relative ease on the Salem shit-surface. Big bumps, rollies, etc., but I got into them over and over. It was nice. then I was trying sw/steam into pivoting into backwards karl-kruizer and trying to roll "under" into a switch karl rolling forward...make sense? The little half-hiker/undertaker thingy...nevermind...

Ok, Joe wants to put some footage together this weekend, so if you guys can come out and possibly bring a light or two (or pitch some cash for some) that would kick ass! I know that Justin has done a little filming, and Joe has done a little more, but I haven't seen much filming going on...kinda sporatic.
It's really hard for me to film because I want to ride when I get the chance, but maybe we can divide up some of the chore for the goal of having a quality vid by the end of the summer. What do you say?

Well, I tried my hand at a little video making. Joe lent me his camera and I shot a little and chopped it up to get my feet wet. I am going to keep my eyes open for a mini-dv camera. Editing this stuff in digital form is too easy. I uploaded it, but aparently it is a pain in the ass to get to, so I am working on getting you guys access to it. It is fairly large for what it is, 18 mgs. I am sure there is a way to compress the file and make it smaller, which I will do.
For now, Joe says I can use the camera for awhile, so I will be filming whenever I can and possibly get some footy on a regular basis.

Here it is boys. The Oregon Trail bar in Seoul. I was just walking in the street and I looked up and saw this. I said "Oh we gotta go there! Ha ha!" They even gave us a discount when I showed them my Oregon driver's license.
